Our Waste and Recycling Utility Department has an opening for an Outreach and Education Technician. As part of the Infrastructure Services group, you will be joining a dedicated group of professionals with a passion for  our environment, that are focused on customer needs, tangible, effective results and maintaining a supportive team environment.

WAGE: $37.10 per hour

HOURS OF WORK: 37.5 hours per week

RESPONSIBILITIES:              

This position will support the Waste & Recycling Utility department with a primary focus on outreach and education, including the new Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional Waste Strategy. Work will include data gathering, research, solution development, performance reporting, project management support, customer assistance/outreach support, and other technical and general duties. The responsibilities can be described as follows:

  • Establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with staff, City Officials, governmental agencies, developers, contractors, and the public
  • Update Manager and other team members on program status, opportunities, and challenges
  • Organize, plan and execute regular outreach activities and programming for the Waste & Recycling Services Department.
  • Promoting environmentally responsible actions through presentations, phone calls, face-to-face meetings, and networking
  • Organize and lead public events and meeting with community members as a representative of the City of Lethbridge
  • Responsible design, creation, and maintenance of communications materials
  • Direct and oversee outsourced work performed by external contractors/vendors
  • Compiling & analyzing communications information, data, and reporting out of key performance indicators
  • Project management including research, planning, scheduling, organizing, analyzing, report writing, communicating with stakeholders, making recommendations
  • Ability to clearly define business objectives and analytical skills to identify issues, weigh competing considerations, and confidently make decisions and recommendations
  • Preparation and presentation of written and oral reports on specific waste-related topics
  • Support for other Waste & Recycling Services department activities, programs, projects, and initiatives
  • Providing outreach support and ICI customer assistance. This will include leading participation in the activities that support the strategy with educational promotions, information and content development, and researching successful techniques.

QUALIFICATIONS:               

  • 2 years of post-secondary education in Environmental Science, Management, or Communications.
  • Experience in complex spreadsheet application and technical data analysis
  • Demonstrated experience in the areas of customer service, working in a team environment
  • Working knowledge about waste and recycling issues and processes is mandatory
  • Technical & public writing skills for the creation of supporting materials for stakeholder reporting and information dissemination.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint (or other presentation software), design or publishing software (example: Adobe Design programs, MS Publisher)
  • Ability to conduct research and analyze technical data, and present recommendations from the results
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills that will result in effective working relationships & a team environment
  • Project and change management implementation experience
  • Community-Based Social Marketing knowledge and experience
  • Ability to work independently and focus on priorities among multiple assignments
  • Friendly, open-minded, respectful communication style to talk tactfully with difficult people, internally and externally
  • A valid, class 5 Operator’s license
