Environmental Defense calls on Federal Government to Prioritize Reuse Infrastructure

Connector December 2021

Prioritizing reusable packaging and products over single-use items will be necessary for Canada to achieve the goal of Zero Plastic Waste by 2030. Reuse is also the most effective way of reducing the pollution associated with a linear economy in situations where it is not possible to eliminate packaging.

Advocacy organization Environmental Defense is calling on the federal government to use the $100-million fund promised during the election campaign to prioritize reuse infrastructure and providers and provide the support and resources by:

  1. Leading and funding the organizing of a 2022 symposium and other opportunities for exchange of information among organizations and companies that have developed container and packaging reuse systems across Canada. The goal is to identify opportunities to rapidly increase the availability of these Zero Waste services in communities across Canada.
  2. Directly funding initiatives to scale up reuse services, based on the opportunities and challenges identified by practitioners, making reuse widely available across Canada.
