Alberta Extends Key Recycling Regulations to 2031 and Announces Used Oil Program Amendments
The Government of Alberta has extended the expiry dates for six recycling and stewardship regulations by five years, from June 30, 2026, to June 30, 2031.
The following regulations are included in the extension:
- Beverage Container Recycling Regulation
- Designated Material Recycling and Management Regulation
- Electronics Designation Regulation
- Lubricating Oil Material Designation Regulation
- Paint and Paint Container Designation Regulation
- Tire Designation Regulation
According to the Government of Alberta, the amendments were approved through Order in Council 139/2026.

The Government of Alberta also announced amendments to the Lubricating Oil Material Designation Regulation related to used oil stewardship and extended producer responsibility (EPR) systems.
The amendments include:
- Moving windshield washer fluid, diesel exhaust fluid, antifreeze, and their containers from the EPR system to the used oil stewardship program.
- Increasing the eligible container size for designated materials in the used oil stewardship program from 30 litres to 50 litres or less.
- Maintaining EPR obligations and fees for affected materials until August 4, 2026, with used oil stewardship program obligations commencing August 5, 2026.
- Applying obligations for larger container sizes (up to 50 litres) beginning August 5, 2026.
The regulation amendments were approved on May 7, 2026, and take effect 90 days following publication.
