In March 2024, the Recycling Council of Alberta’s (RCA) Board of Directors launched a collaborative strategic planning process to outline the organization’s direction for the next five years. Over six months, with support from a strategic consultant and a grant from Calgary Foundation, we developed a visionary roadmap that aligns with the challenges and expectations of 2030, all while striving towards the ultimate goal of a waste-free world.
This process involved extensive virtual and in-person discussions among RCA leaders and partners. We reviewed the core business of the RCA, conducted research on similar organizations, and incorporated insights from the 2023 membership survey. High-level explorations into future needs, opportunities, and industry changes helped us identify key trends and challenges for the future. Through this comprehensive process, the Board successfully articulated the organization’s aspirational goals for 2030, encapsulated in the RCA Vision 2030.
Over the next five years, the RCA will concentrate on six key areas to advance the circular economy in Alberta. First, we will prioritize collaboration across sectors by engaging with recycling and circular economy experts to identify and implement effective waste reduction strategies that benefit our communities and environment.
We are committed to empowering our members by providing robust support for adopting and enhancing circular economy practices within their operations. Additionally, we will design and deliver innovative programs that create new opportunities, driving improvements across the circular economy ecosystem.
Raising awareness of circular economy principles will be central to our initiatives, inspiring and mobilizing action among stakeholders. Our advocacy efforts will focus on influencing systemic changes that promote circularity. Finally, we will strengthen our internal capacity to ensure that the RCA is equipped to drive meaningful change in the evolving landscape of the circular economy
Between now and 2030, the RCA is committed to achieving transformative change through five key goals aimed at advancing the circular economy in the province.
