Bill 31 Proposes Removal of Hazardous Waste PIN Requirement in Alberta

The Government of Alberta has introduced Bill 31 – Red Tape Reduction Statutes Amendment Act, 2026, which includes proposed amendments to the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) related to hazardous waste management.

If passed, the amendments would remove the requirement for hazardous waste generators, carriers, receivers, and custodians to obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) prior to transporting hazardous waste. This change is intended to reduce administrative burden, eliminate processing wait times, and simplify hazardous waste transportation, while maintaining requirements for the safe handling and management of hazardous materials.

The bill has been introduced in the Legislative Assembly and will move through the legislative process in the coming weeks. If approved, the changes would take effect through future regulatory updates, where implementation details will be established.

The full government announcement and additional information on the bill are attached for members’ reference.
