June 25 Webinar: Stabilizing Recycled Plastics End Markets

Alberta’s and Canada’s residential recycling system is entering a new phase. As Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs roll out across the country, attention is shifting beyond collection and processing toward a critical challenge: creating stable, long-term end markets for recycled plastics.
At the same time, the recycled plastics market faces significant uncertainty. Low virgin resin prices, inconsistent demand for post-consumer recycled materials, limited recycled content requirements, shifting global trade dynamics, and unfairly priced imported resin continue to create challenges for municipalities, producers, PROs, recyclers, and investors. Yet expectations for recycled content, circular packaging, and producer accountability continue to grow.
Join the Recycling Council of Alberta and co-hosts the Association of Plastics Recyclers and the Alberta Plastics Recycling Association for a timely discussion exploring how Alberta and Canada can build a more resilient and investable circular plastics economy.
During this webinar, participants will:
- Gain a shared understanding of current recycled plastics market conditions and the structural drivers behind market volatility.
- Explore key risks facing Alberta’s and Canada’s circular plastics system if end-market challenges remain unresolved.
- Learn about policy tools that can strengthen and stabilize demand for recycled plastics.
- Discuss the role of EPR, procurement policies, and recycled content requirements in market development.
- Hear national and international perspectives on approaches that have helped create stronger recycled material markets.
- Identify practical next steps to support resilient circular plastics value chains in Alberta.
The webinar will begin with a brief framing presentation examining past, present, and emerging market conditions for recycled plastics, followed by a panel discussion exploring the interconnected decisions across the plastics value chain that influence market outcomes.
Attendance is free, but advance registration is required.
We hope you can join us for this important conversation as Alberta’s recycling system continues to evolve.
