Canadian Environment Week: A Time to Reflect and Act

This week is Canadian Environment Week, a national celebration of nature, environmental action, and collective responsibility.
Launched by the House of Commons in 1971, the week was created to celebrate Canada’s environmental accomplishments and encourages Canadians to contribute to conserving and protecting their environment. It includes global milestones like:
- United Nations World Environment Day (June 5)
- Clean Air Day in Canada (June 4)
- United Nations World Oceans Day (June 8).
This year’s theme is Ending Plastic Pollution. Canadian Environment Week builds on this focus, highlighting the steps we’re taking, both locally and globally, to create a greener future and reduce plastic waste.
At the Recycling Council of Alberta, we’ve been driving environmental action in Alberta for over 30 years. Our mission is a waste-free world, and we promote, facilitate, and advocate for a circular economy across the province.
Here’s how you can take part this week:
- Visit the RCA Circular Events Calendar and join a local Canadian Environment Week event
- Join the #ProtectNature Challenge to help make a real difference for our environment
- Learn more about plastic waste and pollution reduction
- Discover how Canada is working with the global community to tackle plastic pollution
- Learn about the circular economy and circular communities
- Understand the issue of food loss and waste and building a circular food supply chain in Alberta
Let’s keep the momentum going all year.
