Environment and Climate Change Canada Shares Information on the First Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee

Connector December 2022

The first session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) to develop an international legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, was held from November 28 to December 2, 2022, in Punta del Este, Uruguay.

This meeting came nine months after the adoption of a landmark resolution on plastic pollution at the United Nations Environment Assembly by representatives of 175 countries, during which countries mandated the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to convene and manage the INC process.

Below is a presentation by Environment and Climate Change Canada (in English and French) on the context around the recent negotiations in Uruguay, main outcomes of the first INC meeting, and next steps and the way forward.
