Connector January 2025

The Recycling Council of Alberta is proud to feature Mayor Cathy Heron, a dedicated leader and advocate for sustainability, as a valued member of our Board.

A Leader Committed to Environmental Stewardship

As the first female Mayor of St. Albert in 20 years and only the second in the city’s history, Mayor Cathy Heron exemplifies forward-thinking leadership that embraces progress and inclusivity. Currently serving her second term as Mayor, she has played a pivotal role in shaping St. Albert’s commitment to environmental stewardship, responsible urban growth, and meaningful community engagement, including advocacy for First Nations and LGBTQ+ rights.

A Strong Foundation in Governance

Mayor Heron’s approach to leadership is rooted in education and experience. A graduate of both the University of Alberta and NAIT, she champions diverse perspectives in decision-making. Her political career began with two terms as a city councillor before her election as Mayor in 2017, providing her with a deep understanding of municipal governance and regional collaboration.

Beyond her role in St. Albert, Mayor Heron has made significant contributions to Alberta’s municipal and environmental landscape. She has served as President of Alberta Municipalities, a Board Director for the Alberta Recycling Management Association, and a Director of the Alberta Capital Region Wastewater Commission. Her extensive involvement in initiatives such as the Capital Region Growth Plan Task Force underscores her commitment to building strong, sustainable communities across the province.

Leading by Example

Mayor Heron’s leadership style is defined by collaboration and action. Her ability to foster relationships with elected officials, civil leaders, and business stakeholders has strengthened St. Albert’s reputation as a respected and progressive city. She understands that environmental sustainability is deeply interconnected with municipal planning, and she continues to advocate for innovative waste reduction and recycling initiatives.

A Passion for the Outdoors and Family

Beyond her professional commitments, Mayor Heron enjoys spending time with her partner John and their vibrant blended family of seven children. Whether sailing on Wabamun Lake or camping in Alberta’s stunning landscapes, she embraces the beauty of the province she works so hard to protect.

The RCA is grateful for Mayor Cathy Heron’s dedication and expertise in advancing Alberta’s circular economy. Her leadership strengthens our mission, and we look forward to continuing to work together towards a more sustainable future.
