2001 Municipal Program Award – City of Spruce Grove

The 2001 Municipal Program Award was presented to the City of Spruce Grove for its curbside organics collection program, which collected approximately 300 tonnes of organic feedstock in the first two months of operation.

2001 Innovative Program – City of Edmonton and Canadian Waste Services

The City of Edmonton and Canadian Waste Services received the 2001 Innovative Program award for their partnership in providing waste diversion services to the 2001 IAAF Championships in Athletics. The award also recognized the contributions of the event’s tireless volunteers.

2001 Outstanding Contribution to Recycling – Merlin Plastics

The 2001 Outstanding Contribution to Recycling Award was presented to Merlin Plastics, who have been an important recycling presence in Western Canada for over 12 years, and opened a major new PET bottle recycling plant in Calgary in 2000.

2001 Non-Profit Award – Northern CARE

Northern CARE received the 2001 Non-Profit Award for its work in facilitating the expansion of waste reduction opportunities in Northern Alberta, where municipalities are challenged by distance from recycling markets and low collection volumes.

2001 Individual Achievement Award – Anita Ratchinsky

The 2001 Individual Achievement Award was presented to Anita Ratchinsky for her leadership and long-term commitment to recycling. Anita served as Mayor of St. Albert from 1989 to 1998, and was the founding chair of the Capital Region Waste Minimization Advisory Committee.
