It’s International Compost Awareness Week!


International Compost Awareness Week is here – May 4 to 10  

This week is a great opportunity to promote composting as a key tool in building a circular economy. Composting is one of the clearest examples of a circular system—transforming organic waste into valuable soil-building material.  

A big shoutout to all our RCA members leading the way in composting across Alberta and beyond. Your work is helping build better systems, healthier soils, and stronger communities.

The Recycling Council of Alberta has practical resources to support your composting efforts: 

1. RCA On-Farm Composting Guide 
Our detailed guide is designed for Alberta farmers, ranchers, and landowners interested in composting organic waste. It covers practical techniques, regulatory requirements, and tips to get started. Access the guide here.

  • Recording #1:  An introduction to composting, including how to use our guide and the benefits of compost. 
  • Recording #2: A follow-up session with profiles of Alberta composting operations, including a live Q&A on how to set up a compost site. 

2. Organics Processing Capacity in Alberta – Free Webinar 
This session offered a look at the current state and opportunities for Alberta’s organics processing sector. Industry experts shared insights on capacity development, operations, and technology, along with planning considerations for municipalities. 
 
3. Compost Events This Week 
Check the RCA Circular Calendar for compost-related events and workshops, including Compost Council of Canada’s online sessions such as Grow More Veggies with Containers and Organics Recycling Across Canada: Statistics and Trends, as well as Edmonton’s Home Composting & Building Healthy Soil Virtual Workshop.
