See how Much Food Leftovers Saved this October!
Thanks to our volunteers and donors, we were able to redirect over 32,000 pounds of food during October – the equivalent of saving $67,350 and ensuring that 15,558 pounds of CO2, from food waste, was diverted from our atmosphere!
This October, 101 volunteers worked 368 hours with 101 donors and service agencies to complete 461 routes – to reduce food waste and increase food access. We hit a milestone this October – Leftovers has officially redirected over one million dollars worth of fresh food! Together, we supplied over 17,000 meals this month to the people of Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg!
APTN National News interviewed our Winnipeg City Lead, Brandy Bobier, about our launch in Winnipeg!
“(Brandy Bobier)…the service agencies that exist and are providing food to people, whether it’s family hampers or bagged lunches…needs to be increased ten-fold because food insecurity is hitting every corner of our city right now.”
The Leftovers launch in Winnipeg was a resounding success – Vivian Santos, city councillor for the ward of Point Douglas, was on hand to show her immense support for Leftovers YWG!
The councillor was joined by Bernadette Smith, Point Douglas’s MLA and one of our driven supporters, as well as local folk-hero Mitch Bourbonniere, who volunteers with Mama Bear Clan, Got Bannock and Drag the Red!
Leftovers has officially launched in Hinton! YEG Lead Coordinator, Garnet Borch, has been working with Freson Bros. to secure 11 weekly routes for five service agencies within Hinton – including, the Hinton Food Bank; the Bridges Society Hinton; the Hinton Employment and Learning Place; the Yellowhead Emergency Shelter for Women; and, Options HIV West Hinton.
