RCA Announces 2019 Workshop Series

Connector Winter 2019

The RCA is pleased to announce an exciting workshop series for 2019.

The series starts with a workshop March 26 in Wetaskiwin on Single-Use Items Reduction Strategies, in partnership with Waste Free Edmonton, to address the increasing concern from communities, governments of all levels and the public at large regarding single-use items and associated environmental impacts such as litter and recycling challenges.

This workshop will feature Ray Letheren from Blue Bayfield, an organization from Bayfield, Ontario, of concerned citizens with a mission to reduce the use of disposable items and prevent plastic and pollutants from entering their Great Lake and waterways. He will be joined by Waste Free Edmonton and Plastic-Free YYC who will be discussing their respective Grassroots Single-Use Item Reduction Campaigns.

The City of Edmonton will be presenting its plans regarding a Single-Use Item Reduction Strategy, and we will be providing an update on Vancouver’s comprehensive strategy that was first featured at the 2018 RCA Waste Reduction Conference.

The workshop will be hosted in Wetaskiwin, a city who is currently introducing a plastic checkout bag bylaw. They will be sharing their experiences, along with Municipality of Wood Buffalo and Government of NWT, who have bylaws addressing single use items. John Graham from the Retail Council of Canada will provide the retail perspective on how bylaws can be successfully implemented.

Workshop and registration details are posted at https://recycle.ab.ca/workshop/single-use-items-reduction-strategies-workshop/.

The second workshop in the series will address Illegal Dumping and will be held June 10 in Cochrane and June 11 in Edmonton. This workshop is being presented in partnership with SWANA Northern Lights Chapter and will explore the realities and challenges of illegal dumping, including causes and mitigation strategies. This topic has been our strongest workshop request so we anticipate hot demand. Updates and registration details will be forthcoming at https://recycle.ab.ca/workshops.

The final workshop is planned for November 21 in Lloydminster in partnership with the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council. This workshop will cater to our northeast members and associates – stay tuned for further details.
