RCA Supported Commercial Waste Diversion in Strathcona County

Strathcona County Council referred its proposed Commercial Waste Bylaw back to Administration for further review following its July 7 meeting. While the bylaw was not approved at this time, Council directed Administration to undertake additional research and stakeholder engagement before bringing it back for consideration. 

As part of its ongoing advocacy work, the Recycling Council of Alberta (RCA) submitted a letter in support of the proposed bylaw and participated in the public hearing to voice its support. This advocacy aligned with RCA’s Vision 2030, which identifies advancing waste diversion in Alberta’s Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (ICI) sector as a strategic priority. 

The proposed bylaw would have: 

• Required businesses and multi-family properties to separate garbage, recycling, and organics. 
• Introduced waste diversion plans and education requirements. 
• Supported phased implementation to help organizations transition successfully. 

RCA supported the proposed bylaw because consistent waste diversion policies help recover valuable resources, reduce landfill waste, and strengthen Alberta’s circular economy. The Council will continue advocating for practical, evidence-based policies that advance waste diversion across Alberta’s ICI sector and will follow the bylaw as it moves through the next stage of review.
