The 2024 RCA Rs of Excellence Awards Winners
The Recycling Council of Alberta is excited to share this year’s Rs of Excellence Award winners, honoured at the 2024 RCA Circular Economy Conference at the iconic Fairmont Banff Springs—on Halloween, no less!
A special mention goes to Keith Berens of Live Metal Studio, who masterfully handcrafted each award from reused and recyclable materials, creating unique pieces that beautifully embody the spirit of circularity.

Business Leader Award – Jose House of Creations
This upcycling fashion brand stands out for its zero-waste approach, transforming fabric waste into eco-friendly designs that adhere to the 3Rs model: Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse. Jose House of Creations, created by Josephine Nakafeero, is redefining sustainable fashion, proving that creativity and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.

Political Leader Award – Councillor Peter Demong
A champion for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in Alberta since 2018, Councillor Peter Demong has led initiatives that bring producers and municipalities together to strengthen waste management and recycling efforts across the province. His impactful leadership continues to drive Alberta’s EPR policy forward, fostering a more sustainable future.

Educational Leader Award – Elements Society
Elements Society has empowered Alberta’s youth with the knowledge and skills to embrace sustainability through programs like EcoCooks, which educates students on food waste reduction and environmental stewardship. Changemaker Award – The Alex: Market-to-Market
The Alex’s Market-to-Market project integrates circular economy concepts into its community food center, with innovative programs such as a refillery station and composting demonstration. Lifetime Achievement Award – Christina Seidel
For over three decades, Christina Seidel has been the driving force behind the Recycling Council of Alberta (RCA), transforming Alberta’s waste and recycling landscape with unmatched dedication. Starting as a board member in 1991, she became Executive Director in 1994 and has since been the organization’s guiding light. Known for her candid, no-nonsense approach, Christina has united industry voices across Alberta and Canada, shaping a collective vision for a sustainable future. Her legacy is one of inspiration, mentorship, and unwavering commitment, making her not only an expert in recycling but a true icon in the field.
